Nigerian music icon Innocent ‘2Baba’ Idibia made an unexpected appearance at the Edo State House of Assembly on Monday, drawing significant attention from lawmakers, staff, and members of the public.
His arrival, just minutes before the House resumed plenary after a one-month recess, created a buzz in the gallery as onlookers took notice of the legendary singer. His presence momentarily shifted focus from legislative proceedings, with aides and staff eager to catch a glimpse of him.
Though he left midway through the sitting, 2Baba was later seen at the Legislative Quarters along Ihama Road in the evening. The purpose of his visit remains unclear, sparking speculation about possible engagements with government officials.
During the plenary, the Assembly deliberated on three key bills, including amendments to the Edo State Health Insurance Law (2019) and the Edo State Lands Administration and Geographical Information Service Law (2018), as well as a proposed law for the establishment of the Edo State Roads Fund and its administrative board.
Additionally, lawmakers addressed rising concerns over insecurity in the state as part of their deliberations. The Assembly also adopted a business calendar for the new quarter, scheduling 42 legislative days—six in January, 15 in February, and 21 in March.
The Clerk of the House, Yahaya Omogbai, read out requests for the confirmation of key government appointments, including a nominee for Chairman of the Edo State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, an Executive Secretary for the agency, and Mr. Anthony Ojo as a member of the Edo State Oil and Gas Producing Areas Commission (EDSOPADEC).
As the Edo Assembly resumes its legislative duties, 2Baba’s surprise visit remains a talking point, leaving many to wonder about his possible interests in governance or social advocacy within the state.
