Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, former Governor of Sokoto State, has described recent defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as opportunistic moves driven by self-interest. Speaking after the PDP Northwest Zonal Executive Council Meeting in Kaduna on Saturday, Tambuwal criticized defectors, accusing them of prioritizing personal benefits over public service.
“People leave parties for various reasons,” Tambuwal said. “But what we see today is ‘stomach infrastructure’ politics — decisions made not for the people, but for selfish gains.”
Tambuwal was unequivocal in his assessment of the APC-led administration, condemning its economic policies and governance approach. “If you’re a politician with a conscience, you won’t join the APC given the current economic hardship and the dismal performance of Tinubu’s administration,” he asserted.
He called on the PDP and other opposition forces to unite ahead of the 2027 elections, describing the APC as an empty shell devoid of vision. “The APC offers nothing beyond personal gratification. We must present Nigerians with a credible alternative to restore hope and national development.”
The meeting concluded with a communiqué from PDP Northwest Chairman, Senator Bello Hayatu Gwarzo, affirming the party’s commitment to reclaiming power. “The PDP must resolve its internal differences and mobilize strategically,” Gwarzo stated. “Nigerians are counting on us for leadership.”
Prominent PDP figures like former Kaduna State Governor Ahmed Makarfi and ex-Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau attended the gathering, signaling the party’s renewed determination to mount a formidable challenge in the next election cycle.
