Burkina Faso’s President, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has boldly declared that the country is not operating within a democratic framework but is instead in the midst of a “popular, progressive revolution.”
Speaking during a flag-raising ceremony at the Koulouba Palace, Traoré dismissed the widely held belief that democracy is essential for national development. “If we have to say it loud and clear here, we are not in a democracy. We are in a popular, progressive revolution,” the president stated firmly.
Traoré argued that revolutions, not democratic processes, are what truly transform nations. “We must necessarily go through a revolution. So this question of democracy or libertinism of action or expression has no place. As much as you think you are free to speak and act, the other is also free to speak and act, and there we end up with a society of disorder.”
Citing global examples, Traoré asserted that no country has achieved significant development solely through democracy. “It is impossible to name a country that has developed in democracy. Democracy is only the result,” he was quoted as saying by Burkina24.

Known for his unconventional decisions since assuming office through a military coup in September 2022, the 37-year-old President recently made headlines by rejecting Saudi Arabia’s proposal to build 200 mosques in Burkina Faso. Instead, he urged the Kingdom to redirect such investments towards infrastructure projects that directly benefit citizens.
Traoré emphasized that his government would intensify its efforts to communicate and educate citizens about the ongoing revolution, which he believes is crucial for Burkina Faso’s progress.
