
Three exceptional Nigerian scientists have been recognized by President Joe Biden with the prestigious Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). Established in 1996 by former President Bill Clinton, the PECASE is the highest accolade granted by the United States government to early-career scientists and engineers who demonstrate exceptional potential in their fields.
This year’s honorees, employed or funded by 14 U.S. government agencies, include Azeez Butali, Gilbert Lilly Endowed Professor of Diagnostic Sciences at the University of Iowa; Ijeoma Opara, Associate Professor of Public Health at Yale University; and Abidemi Ajiboye, Executive Vice Chair of the Biomedical Engineering Department at Case Western Reserve University.
Their groundbreaking research and innovative contributions underscore the global impact of Nigerian talent. President Bola Tinubu commended their achievements, emphasizing how their work highlights Nigeria’s capacity for excellence on the world stage.
AZEEZ BUTALI
Azeez Butali has earned international acclaim for his research into the genetic factors contributing to cleft lip and palate, particularly within African populations. His work, supported by numerous National Institutes of Health and foundation grants, has improved access to care and addressed cultural and mental health challenges for affected families. A Fellow of several prestigious organizations, Butali expressed gratitude for the recognition, stating that the award serves as an impetus to advance his research.
IJEOMA OPARA
Ijeoma Opara, an expert in public health and director of The SASH Lab at Yale, focuses on using strengths-based approaches to prevent substance misuse and improve sexual health outcomes for youth of color. Her groundbreaking work has garnered multiple accolades, including the NIH Director’s Early Independence Award and the NIDA Racial Equity Initiative Visionary Award. Opara’s research highlights protective factors within Black and Hispanic communities, moving beyond deficit-focused prevention models.
ABIDEMI AJIBOYE
Abidemi Ajiboye, a leading figure in biomedical engineering, is advancing healthcare solutions by bridging engineering and biology to create innovative medical devices. As Executive Vice Chair at Case Western Reserve University, Ajiboye’s work exemplifies the transformative potential of biomedical engineering in improving patient outcomes and supporting clinicians.
