A man of vision, resilience, and innovation, Otunba Pedro’s life and career have left an indelible impact across various sectors, particularly in banking, governance, and entrepreneurship.
A Trailblazer in Banking and Finance
Otunba Femi Pedro’s journey began with humble origins but quickly became a legacy of excellence. A banker to the core, he started his illustrious banking career in 1982 at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), where he gained invaluable experience in financial management and policy formulation.
In 1988, he transitioned to the private sector, joining First City Merchant Bank (now First City Monument Bank) as the Executive Assistant to its Chairman and CEO, the late Otunba Subomi Balogun. His tenure at First City Merchant Bank sharpened his strategic financial acumen and positioned him for greater exploits.
A significant milestone in his career came in 1989 when he became a founding member and one of the seed investors of Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank). His contributions to the bank’s foundation were instrumental in shaping GTBank into one of Nigeria’s leading financial institutions. During this period, he also served as Chairman of the Institute’s Lagos Branch, a role that underscored his leadership and influence in the banking sector.
After leaving GTBank, Otunba Pedro embarked on another groundbreaking journey as the Managing Director and CEO of Comet Merchant Bank. Under his visionary leadership, the bank evolved into First Atlantic Bank, which, after a subsequent acquisition, became FinBank and is now part of First City Monument Bank.
A Fintech Pioneer in Nigeria
Beyond conventional banking, Otunba Pedro was a pioneer in Nigeria’s financial technology (fintech) revolution. Under his leadership, First Atlantic Bank became Nigeria’s first true fintech institution, introducing several innovations that transformed the banking landscape.
In 1999, he introduced Nigeria’s first Internet banking infrastructure, an achievement that positioned First Atlantic Bank as a trailblazer in digital finance. He also launched the groundbreaking “Flash Me Cash” mobile money platform, which provided millions of Nigerians with seamless financial transactions long before fintech became mainstream.
His strategic partnership with Infosys led to the implementation of the Finacle banking solution, which modernized banking operations and enhanced customer experience. The introduction of first@tlanticonline in 2000, Nigeria’s first internet banking system, further reinforced his legacy as a fintech pioneer, providing customers with unparalleled convenience and access to banking services.
Thought Leadership and Literary Contributions
Otunba Pedro’s influence extends beyond banking. In 2020, he published an award-winning book titled Formula for Wealth, a comprehensive guide outlining essential principles for wealth creation through entrepreneurship, investment, and leadership.
The book provides practical strategies for financial success, offering insights into overcoming economic barriers such as the poverty trap and money illusion.
