Renowned Nigerian comedian and actor Okey Bakassi has added a regal feather to his cap as he steps into a new chapter of leadership, having been appointed the traditional ruler of Umuihuocha Autonomous Community in Mbaise, Imo State.
Okey Bakassi, whose real name is Okechukwu Onyegbule, will now be formally addressed as His Royal Highness, Eze Okechukwu Onyegbule, the OKWE II of Umuihuocha Obohia Autonomous Community. His coronation marks a historic milestone, as he becomes the only entertainer in Nigeria recently elevated to the position of a traditional ruler.
While specifics about his predecessor remain sparse, the title “OKWE II” signals that he succeeds a former monarch known as OKWE I. The new Eze’s ascendancy reflects the community’s confidence in his leadership capacity and moral standing.
The 55-year-old entertainer, who once served as Senior Special Adviser on entertainment matters to former Imo State Governor Ikedi Ohakim, shared the joyous news on his social media platforms over the weekend. Captioning his announcement “NEXT LEVEL,” Bakassi thanked his people for their trust and described his appointment as a call to “Service to Humanity” and “Service to Community.”
The announcement sparked a wave of congratulatory messages from fans, colleagues, and admirers.
Veteran comedian Gbenga Adeyinka was among the first to celebrate him publicly, writing:
“Congratulations on your new elevation by the Umuihuocha Autonomous Community! Your community made an outstanding choice by selecting such a distinguished gentleman and exemplary leader. May you inspire positive change.”
Shaibu Husseini, Executive Director of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), also saluted the new monarch, fondly referring to him as “Ichie Na Umuihuocha.”
As he steps into his royal role, many are optimistic that Okey Bakassi will bring the same charisma, wisdom, and commitment he displayed in his entertainment career and public service into this new and prestigious responsibility.
