
Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has underscored the indispensable role of women in society, asserting that their absence would weaken communities, stall economic growth, and leave families directionless.
Speaking at the 2025 International Women’s Day (IWD) celebration in Makurdi, Alia emphasized the need for collective action to educate the girl child, describing education as the most effective tool for dismantling oppression and marginalization.

He praised Benue women for their contributions across diverse sectors, including agriculture, trade, governance, education, healthcare, and policymaking. He urged men to respect and support women’s aspirations, stressing that gender inclusivity is vital for progress.
“In Benue, our women are more than just caregivers; they are farmers, traders, legislators, educators, and professionals shaping policies. Their contributions sustain our economy, fortify our communities, and guide our families,” he said.
Governor Alia described the 2025 IWD theme, “Accelerate Action,” as a timely call to bridge gender disparities, accelerate women’s empowerment, and eliminate societal constraints that hinder their growth.
“Many women still face inequality—denied education, forced into early marriage, and subjected to harmful cultural practices. We must act swiftly to rewrite this narrative,” he declared.

Highlighting his administration’s commitment to gender empowerment, Alia revealed that the 2025 state budget prioritizes women’s economic advancement. Through grants and soft loans for cooperative groups, women will receive financial support to thrive in trade, agriculture, and small enterprises, fostering financial independence.
He further called on society to advocate for women’s rights and dismantle systemic barriers that impede progress. In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, the governor reiterated the importance of universal education, affirming that every child, regardless of gender, deserves quality learning opportunities.
“This is not just a moral obligation; it is a strategic investment in a prosperous future,” Alia concluded
