Tensions are escalating in Kano as two rival emirs, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero and Khalifa Muhammadu Sanusi II, move ahead with plans for separate Sallah Durbar celebrations. The ongoing battle for the Kano Emirate is now set to play out in the streets, with both traditional rulers preparing grand processions backed by different power blocs.
Despite an unresolved legal dispute, the 15th Emir, Bayero, has officially notified security agencies of his plans to hold traditional events, including Hawan Sallah, Hawan Daushe, and Hauwa Nasarawa, coinciding with his five-year anniversary on the throne. A letter from his private secretary emphasized the peaceful nature of the celebration while seeking cooperation from security forces.

Meanwhile, the Kano State Government has reaffirmed its support for the 16th Emir, Sanusi, directing the four recognized emirates to proceed with the festival under his leadership. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf assured that residents would not be deprived of the cultural spectacle, reinforcing Sanusi’s authority.
The Sallah Durbar, an iconic display of Kano’s heritage featuring elaborate horseback processions, traditional performances, and symbolic visits between the Emir and government officials, risks becoming a battleground for influence. While Sanusi is set to pay homage to Governor Yusuf at the Government House, Bayero is expected to receive federal dignitaries at an undisclosed venue, highlighting the deepening divide.

Security concerns loom large, as last year’s Durbar was canceled due to fears of unrest. The newly appointed Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, has pledged to maintain order, though efforts to obtain an official statement from the police spokesperson have so far been unsuccessful.
With the city’s rich traditions now intertwined with a high-stakes power struggle, all eyes are on Kano as it braces for a potentially contentious Sallah celebration.
