The Yemisi Shyllon Museum of Art (YSMA) at Pan-Atlantic University recently joined forces with the Guild of Professional Fine Artists of Nigeria (GFA) and law firm Kenna Partners to host a workshop aimed at equipping Nigerian artists with essential legal knowledge. Titled ‘Empowering Artists: Navigating Legal and Contractual Issues in the Arts World’, the event addressed critical aspects of copyright law and intellectual property rights.
For the first time in Nigeria, artists were provided with a comprehensive guide to understanding how legal frameworks can protect their work, inspire innovation, and contribute to national development. Facilitators Okechukwu Ekweanya and Ifunanya Ikwueto outlined the risks artists face when they overlook legal agreements, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding their creative rights to avoid exploitation and achieve sustainable growth in the art industry.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Jess Castellote, YSMA’s Director, expressed the museum’s commitment to fostering the creative economy:
“Our goal is to bridge the knowledge gap in copyright and intellectual property rights. By doing this, we empower artists to not only thrive in their careers but also contribute meaningfully to cultural preservation and economic growth.”
Prof. Fabian Ajogwu, Senior Partner at Kenna Partners, stressed the importance of protecting artistic contributions:
“Artists play a crucial role in shaping cultural identity and preserving history. Understanding your legal rights enables you to make informed decisions and ensures your contributions are valued and respected.”
GFA President George Edozie described the workshop as a game-changer:
“This initiative isn’t just about learning; it’s about action. By securing their intellectual property, artists are taking control of their future and elevating the creative industry as a whole.”
The workshop attracted 30 artists, each gaining practical tools to navigate legal and contractual challenges. Participants left equipped with the knowledge to turn intellectual property into a driver for long-term success.
As Nigeria’s premier art institution, YSMA continues to champion initiatives that strengthen the creative sector. With an extensive collection of artworks and a mission to preserve Nigeria’s artistic heritage, the museum remains a beacon for cultural enrichment and innovation.
