The Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy (FMACTCE) has reaffirmed its dedication to empowering young creatives in their journey toward self-reliance. This commitment was demonstrated during an empowerment programme for schoolgirls in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), organized as part of the 2024 National Creativity Week (NCW).
The event, which took place at Stella Maris Schools, Life Camp, saw the participation of over 80 students who received specialized training in natural hair care, wig making, and the production of organic hair oil. Themed “Transforming World, Promoting Sustainable Development,” the initiative was a collaborative effort between the ministry and Photizo Life Foundation.
The National Creativity Week serves as a platform to celebrate the power of creativity in fostering economic empowerment, particularly for youth and children. It originated as an offshoot of the Creative Africa Initiative, introduced at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Ghana in 2008, and is globally recognized as World Creativity and Innovation Day.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Raphael Oraeluno, Permanent Secretary of FMACTCE, emphasized the importance of nurturing creative talents to drive Nigeria’s economic growth. Represented by Mrs. Ugochi Akudo-Nwosu, Director of Entertainment and Creative Economy, Oraeluno underscored the role of the creative economy in reducing unemployment, poverty, and youth restiveness while enhancing wealth creation and the nation’s GDP.
Mrs. Adanna Enwezor, Founder of Photizo Life Foundation, highlighted the significance of natural hair care not just as a cultural identity but also as a viable economic opportunity. She stressed the dangers of chemical-based hair treatments and advocated for organic alternatives.
Natural hair enthusiast and Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Creative Arts, Culture, and Tourism at NAN, Mrs. Ekemini Ladejobi, commended the initiative and urged students to leverage the knowledge gained for both personal and professional growth. Participants expressed their appreciation, acknowledging the training’s value in enhancing their confidence and entrepreneurial prospects.
