As Nigerians prepare to celebrate Valentine’s Day, the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has called for caution, stressing the importance of responsible choices in matters of love and intimacy.
In a statement issued by the agency, Dr. Temitope Ilori, Director General of NACA, underscored the need for heightened awareness about HIV prevention, urging individuals to prioritize their health and that of their partners. The statement, signed by NACA’s Head of Public Relations, Mrs. Toyin Aderibigbe, emphasized that Valentine’s Day should be marked with informed decisions and adherence to safe practices.
Dr. Ilori noted that HIV remains a major public health concern but can be prevented through responsible behavior. She cautioned against risky practices such as unprotected sex, multiple sexual partners, and substance abuse, which could increase the likelihood of HIV transmission.
“We encourage Nigerians to celebrate love while making health-conscious decisions. HIV is preventable, and individuals have the power to stop its spread by taking proactive steps. Get tested, know your status, and make informed choices,” Dr. Ilori stated.
The agency further urged Nigerians to incorporate regular HIV testing into their healthcare routine, noting that free testing services are available at all government hospitals.
