Nigeria has officially joined the BRICS bloc as a partner country, marking a significant step in its pursuit of international collaboration and economic advancement. This development was announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs following the country’s acceptance of an invitation during the 2024 BRICS summit in Russia.
As a partner country, Nigeria aligns itself with a group of emerging economies that share a commitment to addressing global economic disparities. While distinct from full membership, the partnership offers Nigeria a platform to engage in trade, investment, energy security, and climate initiatives alongside BRICS members.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that the partnership aligns with Nigeria’s development objectives and its aspiration for inclusive growth and regional integration. “This collaboration underscores our commitment to driving innovation, enhancing trade, and fostering socio-economic cooperation in line with national priorities,” the ministry stated.
By joining the BRICS bloc, Nigeria positions itself to amplify its global presence, leverage shared opportunities, and contribute to shaping a more equitable economic order. The country’s inclusion as the ninth BRICS partner reflects its growing role in fostering international partnerships to support sustainable development.
