Amaju Pinnick, former president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has missed out on re-election to the FIFA Council after falling short by just one vote. Pinnick garnered 28 votes at the 14th CAF Extraordinary General Assembly in Cairo, Egypt, failing to secure one of the six seats allocated to Africa. The successful candidates included Faouzi Lekjaa of Morocco, Ahmed Yahya of Mauritania, Kanizat Ibrahim of Comoros, Souleiman Waberi of Djibouti, Hamidou Djibrilla of Niger, and Hani Abo Rida of Egypt. The FIFA Council, the governing body’s top decision-making unit between congresses, consists of 37 members elected for renewable four-year terms. Pinnick, who was initially elected in 2021, was the third Nigerian to serve on the council after Oyo Orok Oyo and Amos Adamu. Having led the NFF for two terms between 2014 and 2022, he was succeeded by Ibrahim Gusau. Meanwhile, Patrice Motsepe was re-elected unopposed as CAF president.
