Prof. Titi Adeyemo, a leading haematologist from Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), has revealed that individuals who regularly donate blood could extend their lifespan by up to five years.
Speaking at a voluntary blood donation drive organized at the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) office in Lagos, Adeyemo emphasized the numerous health benefits associated with frequent blood donation. According to her, the process helps keep the bone marrow active, ultimately contributing to a healthier and more youthful body.
Despite these benefits, Nigeria continues to rely heavily on family replacement donors—where relatives are pressured into donating blood for loved ones in need. The haematologist lamented this dependency and stressed the importance of cultivating a culture of voluntary blood donation. Adeyemo urged the public not to wait for emergencies before stepping forward to donate blood. She highlighted the ongoing efforts of her department to facilitate blood donation campaigns whenever they receive invitations, underscoring the critical role of consistent blood supply in saving lives.
