The Trump administration has suspended
funding for the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), a move that has sent shockwaves through global health communities. Since its launch in 2003, PEPFAR has been a lifeline for millions, channeling over $85 billion into the fight against HIV/AIDS across more than 50 countries, including Nigeria,
which has received $6 billion in support.
This sudden halt jeopardizes ongoing and
future HIV/AIDS programs, leaving over a million Nigerians at risk of losing access to life-saving treatment. A source from the Institute of Human Virology Nigeria disclosed that the Nigerian government’s inability to fully manage its
HIV and malaria programs contributed to the funding freeze.
Experts warn that if urgent measures are
not taken, the health of vulnerable populations could face severe consequences,
threatening years of progress in combating the epidemic.
