The African Institutes of Waste Management and Environmental Studies (AIWES) has applauded an extraordinary environmental project in Kaduna that repurposes 25,000 plastic bottles to construct a four-room toilet facility.
AIWES Registrar, Dr. Ahmed Lateef Tayo, visited the site and hailed Mallam Alamin Lawal, the mastermind behind the project, for pioneering a sustainable solution to plastic waste. According to Tayo, the initiative is a game-changer in both recycling and waste management, setting an example for how innovative construction methods can address environmental challenges.

He emphasized that in developed countries, plastic waste is increasingly being transformed into eco-friendly structures, reducing pollution and promoting sustainability. He urged African nations to adopt similar practices, describing the bottle-based construction as not only durable but also adaptable to various environmental conditions.
As a recognition of Lawal’s exceptional contribution to environmental preservation, AIWES announced that he would be honored with the Eco-Management Warrior Award of the Year upon the project’s completion. Tayo further called on the Nigerian government to acknowledge Lawal’s ingenuity with a national award, underscoring the need to celebrate and incentivize local solutions to global environmental problems.
Lawal’s project, which integrates sustainability into basic infrastructure, is a testament to the power of creative recycling and a reminder that even waste can be transformed into valuable resources for the community.
