Africa is set to make cinematic history with the release of Makemation, the continent’s first feature film centered on artificial intelligence. The groundbreaking film will premiere in Lagos, Nigeria, this Easter, with a nationwide cinema release scheduled for April 18, 2025.
Makemation has already garnered international attention, with preview screenings at the 2024 Global AI Summit in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; Kenya Innovation Week 2024; and a private session at the U.S. Consul General’s residence in Lagos. Its international release will follow in May 2025, targeting audiences across Africa, the U.S., Europe, and the Middle East.
The film, a family drama blending pop culture, AI research, and comedy, features a mix of Nollywood stars, tech experts, public officials, and social media personalities. It explores how young Africans leverage advanced technology to address the continent’s most pressing challenges.
“Makemation is more than a movie; it’s a movement,” said creator and producer Toyosi Akerele-Ogunsiji, a global AI development advocate. “We want to ignite conversations about AI’s transformative power and position Africa as a key player in the global digital revolution.”
Directed by award-winning filmmaker Michael “AMA Psalmist” Akinrogunde, the movie was filmed in diverse Nigerian locales, from serene riverine communities to Lagos’ bustling urban landscape.
Beyond entertainment, the film promotes STEM education, digital skills, financial literacy, gender equality, and inclusive technological access. Produced by Rise Interactive Studios and Rise Networks, Makemation aims to showcase Nigeria’s innovative spirit to a global audience.
Distributed exclusively by Nile Entertainment, the film invites viewers to join the conversation on its official website and social media platforms, promising laughter, insight, and a glimpse into Africa’s technological future.
