American rap icon Snoop Dogg has opened up about his unease with LGBTQ+ representation in children’s films, admitting that the trend has left him hesitant to take his grandchildren to the cinema.
Speaking on the It’s Giving Podcast, the 52-year-old entertainer reflected on his experience watching Pixar’s Lightyear (2022) with his grandson. The animated spin-off of the Toy Story franchise, voiced by Chris Evans, sparked debate upon release for featuring a same-sex couple raising a child.
According to Snoop, the film prompted unexpected questions from his grandson that caught him unprepared.
“My grandson asked, ‘Papa Snoop? How can she have a baby with a woman? She’s a woman!’” he recounted. “I didn’t come in for this—I just came to watch the movie.”
The rapper admitted he struggled to provide answers in the moment, saying the experience left him unsettled.
“It messed me up. I’m like, scared to go to the movies now. Y’all are throwing me in the middle of questions I don’t have answers for. These are kids—do we have to show that at this age?”
The Lightyear controversy, which reignited debates about representation in family entertainment, saw Disney initially consider removing the same-sex kiss from the film before Pixar staff successfully advocated for its reinstatement. While many hailed the move as a milestone for inclusivity, the film also faced bans in several countries.
For Snoop Dogg, however, the issue remains deeply personal. More than a cultural debate, it has become a family moment that left him grappling with the kinds of questions many parents and grandparents may not feel prepared to answer.
